Artist

André Nieuwenhuizen was born in 1952 in Johannesburg, South Africa.  He always had an interest in photography and can remember going to the Kruger National Park and car races at Kyalami in South Africa taking pictures with a Kodak Instamatic camera.  After completing his studies at university, he started buying Canon photographic gear as and when he could afford it. His first serious photographic foray to the Kruger National Park was in the early 70s with his now longtime friend, Don Jennings.

 

André is an avid photographer who does not restrict his art to any type of photography.  His versatility is shown in his galleries which include both color and black and white wildlife, grand scenic, fly fishing and auto art images.  No matter what the photographic subject, André’s mission is to capture the drama, mood, humor and romance of the subject.

 

His approach to any artform is to master the process and then to break all the rules and see where he ends up.  With regard to wildlife photography, André does not subscribe to the approach of invading the space of wild animals by putting himself at risk shooting pictures with small lenses.  More often than not the animals life is put at risk because the guide will shoot the animal if the animal attacks the photographer.  André exercises the highest level of ethics in capturing and creating his images.

 

During André’s professional career he committed to become philanthropic after he retired.  He always felt that covering living costs and accumulating wealth for retirement were his highest priority.  Now in retirement, André is making good on this commitment by donating a large portion of the profits generated from the sale of each piece of artwork to a designated not for profit organization.  Please go to the "Charities" page to see a list of charities to which he has donated.

Technical

André has been shooting with Canon camera gear since the early 70s. He is most often seen trekking around with a heavy tripod and camera gear. The camera gear André takes on location depends on the subject and type of photography. Here is a current list of his Canon camera gear:
